THE mANGROVE SPA — Antigua
The Mangrove Spa is conceived as a secluded wellness retreat embedded within the mangrove landscape of Antigua’s southern coast. Rather than treating the site as a backdrop, the project uses the mangrove as its organising principle, allowing architecture, water and vegetation to shape the experience of the spa.
The project unfolds as a gradual journey from land into landscape. A small reception marks the threshold before a raised walkway leads through the mangroves to a central pavilion for yoga, meditation and rest. Beyond, individual treatment rooms are dispersed along the water’s edge, creating a sequence of private spaces surrounded by vegetation and views across the lagoon.
Raised lightly above the terrain, the architecture responds to the sensitivity of the wetland while drawing on the simplicity of Caribbean pavilion structures. Natural ventilation, deep shade and open thresholds reduce the distinction between interior and exterior, allowing changing light, water, sound and vegetation to become part of the experience.
The result is a spa defined less by enclosure than by immersion: a quiet progression into the landscape in which architecture acts as a frame for the mangrove itself.
