THE (H)EDGELANDS — Gaia Device

The (H)edgelands proposes the rewilding of Britain as a 500-year project, using remote sensing and territorial planning to identify overlooked land capable of becoming forest and carbon sink. Beginning at the field margins, green lanes and residual spaces between urban and rural territory, the project imagines these fragments gradually joining into a new ecological network, reconnecting London with the wider landscape.

The Gaia Device operates across scales, from drones that seed, pheramone dispense for pollinators, and monitor the emerging forest to a series of architectural centres for timber innovation connecting the countryside, Southampton and London. Architecture becomes part of a much longer process of cultivation, extraction and renewal: not an isolated object, but an instrument within a changing landscape.
